The compressor is the most expensive part of an air conditioner, so knowing the warning signs early can be the difference between a small repair and a big replacement.
1. Hard starting
The outdoor unit shudders, hums or takes several tries to start. Often the capacitor is weak or the compressor needs a hard-start kit. Caught early, this is a cheap fix.
2. Breaker trips when the AC starts
A compressor drawing too much amperage trips the breaker. Do not keep resetting it. This can be a shorted winding or a seized compressor and needs a proper diagnosis.
3. Loud rattling, clanking or screaming
Internal mechanical noise from the compressor is serious. Turn it off and call for compressor repair.
4. Warm air with the outdoor unit running
If the fan spins but the compressor is silent or hot to the touch, it may be on internal overload.
5. Reduced airflow and cooling over time
A compressor losing pumping capacity cools less each season.
6. Tripping on overheating
Dirty condenser coils and low refrigerant make the compressor run hot. Fix the cause and the compressor may be fine.
Repair or replace?
If the unit is under ten years old and the compressor is under manufacturer warranty, a compressor replacement is often worth it. If the unit is older, uses R-22 or has other worn parts, a new condenser or full system replacement is usually the better value. We quote both. And the best prevention is an annual AC tune-up that keeps the coil clean and the charge correct. Call (855) 459-5498 or find AC compressor repair in your city.
